Robert L. Cousins (R.L Cousins) was the all black high school of covington from 1957-1970. It existed only in part to the vicious cycle of segregation that loomed not only in Newton County, but also throughout the state of Georgia. R.L Cousins High school showed its dominance in football in only its second year. In November 3 of 1967 against Westside High school of Lincoln County, the Wolverines, led by Coach Gilbert N. Turman, annihilated Westside High school of Lincoln County 102-0. According to the Georgia High school Football Historical Association that record still stands to this day. R.L Cousins Football Team was the first African American football team in Covington GA. We give recognition to all of the players on the team.
